Sicily’s Baroque towns are one of the island’s most evocative hidden wonders, and this full day trip from Taormina/Giardini di Naxos, introduces you to three of the best. See ancient Syracuse and its historic center on the island of Ortigia, and bask in Noto’s Baroque magnificence.
The first stop on the tour after leaving Taormina or Giardini di Naxos by a comfortable minivan on the island of Ortigia, which happens to be the historic center of Syracuse. Meet up with a local guide who will introduce you, from outside, to the Cathedral, the Aretusa fountain and many other attractions of the city centre. You can ask your guide all questions you have about the beautiful town while you’re there, but don’t keep them for too long otherwise your lunch, which is included in the tour, will get cold.
Syracuse’s Archaeological Park is one of many historic attractions on the island, but few are so complete. That’s your second stop on the tour after leaving Ortigia, and you’re going to be blown away. Constructed five centuries before Christ and then rebuilt eight centuries later, it’s centered around the Teatro Greco, a 16,000-seat amphitheater. Other key sites you shouldn’t miss include the Latomia del Paradiso, the limestone quarry for which the stone that built the city was extracted.
Wrapping up our awesome trip to Syracuse, Ortigia, and Catania, we dive into Catania's vibrant food scene—truly a shining star in Sicily. Positioned between the mighty Mount Etna and the beautiful Ionian Sea, Catania is a blend of history, culture, and fantastic food. Surrounded by gorgeous baroque buildings and lively streets, get ready for a tasty surprise that'll tickle your taste buds. This unexpected tasting adventure will let you try some of the best local treats, capturing the real essence of Catania's diverse food culture.
As the late afternoon rolls in, our adventure comes to an end, and you'll get a ride back to Taormina. The memories of this Sicilian adventure are bound to stick around, leaving you with a lasting impression of our exploration through Syracuse, Ortigia, and the delicious flavors of Catania.
